About Old Salt
Old Salt is a transatlantic folk & roots band. It’s Americana, Old-Time and Roots music, but offers so much more by celebrating and implementing the musical backgrounds of the different band members that influenced the sound of the project over the last ten years. The band will tear through the wild rhythms of a Bulgarian tune or draw from the haunting meldies of Scandinavian folk songs. You’ll hear Appalachian Mountain sounds next to Andes Mountain music. It’s a journey from the streets of New Orleans up to the folk revival of the North East USA... In other words, don’t box them in! But rest assured, your world-music, jazz, blues, bluegrass, classical, swing and singer-songwriter loving audiences will fall in love with Old Salt.
Be ready to see and hear an energy packed live performance that’ll kick you out of your seat, exciting arrangements, medleys that leap from culture to culture, or ballads that speak of life, love, loss, social and environmental justice. It’s handcrafted original and traditional music, sung with four part harmonies and played close around one microphone, a kind of improvised dance that brings a heightened connection between the musicians and the audience as well.

Biography
The band met back In the summer of 2013 when Dan Wall, a then carpenter and street musician from New York, found his way to the world music conference Etno HistEria and to the Floating Castle Festival in the Istria region of Slovenia. During this two week period he met and collaborated with talented and inspiring musicians from around the globe, some of whom backed him up on his first festival show. Among them were later-to-be Old Salt members Anton Teljebäck, Dave Barfoot, Lotte Remmen and Johannes Wannyn.
Not long after their adventures in Slovenia, they were met again in February 2014 when invited to a music festival in Umeå, Sweden. This road led finally to Ghent, Belgium, where bass player Lara Rosseel joined the group. In 2016, Old Salt released their first album Up River Overseas, which was recorded in Umeå, Sweden.
In 2017, French cellist Toby Kuhn entered the band during the same Floating Castle Festival in Slovenia. The same year the band won the European World of Bluegrass Award in Voorthuizen (NL) with an overwhelming live performance. In 2019 they released their second album, Commons, as a septet with former band members Anton Teljebäck and Dave Barfoot. In 2020, Berlin-based double bass player Tomás Peralta from Chile joined the Old Salt family. During the Pandemic Old Salt went back to the studio in 2021 and recorded a live EP, Live in Room 13, where they also recorded a beautiful live stream series with amazing musician legends from the Ghent folk scene, like Nils De Caster, Sara De Smedt, Laura Cortese and Leander Vandereecken. Old Salt released their third full-length album, Bindle in 2025.
